Cabarete is a vibrant beach town known for its stunning coastline, world-class water sports, and lively nightlife. I had the privilege of living in Cabarete, and I can say firsthand that this town is packed with adventure, great food, and unforgettable experiences. While there’s so much more to explore, here are some of my top things to do while visiting this Caribbean paradise.

  • Start Your Day Watching the Surfers at Playa Encuentro

There’s no better way to begin your morning than at Playa Encuentro, the best surf spot on the North Coast. Whether you're a surfer yourself or just enjoy watching, the early morning waves offer a spectacular sight as surfers carve through the water. Grab a coffee, find a shady spot, and take in the peaceful yet exhilarating atmosphere. If you're up for a challenge, you can even take a surf lesson!

  • Try the Local Food in Callejon de la Loma

For an authentic taste of the Dominican Republic, head to Callejon de la Loma, a vibrant neighborhood in Cabarete known for its local food spots. From pica polla, mofongo to delicious empanadas and hearty sancocho, Callejon is the perfect place to experience the flavors of the island. Eating here is not just about the food—it’s about the culture, the people, and the atmosphere. Happy Family Restaurant is the on the corner at the entrance. It's owned by a local family and the food is the best! If you want cheap, there are many comedors.

  • Relax at Playa Sosua

A short drive from Cabarete, Playa Sosua is a must-visit beach with crystal-clear turquoise waters and golden sand. It’s an ideal spot for snorkeling, swimming, or simply lounging under the sun. The beach is lined with small bars and restaurants where you can sip on a fresh piña colada or enjoy a plate of fried fish while soaking in the stunning views. (NOTE: Sosua Beach is changing, they are removing the small beach shacks and replacing them with more modern dining areas. I truly hope this doesn't destroy the beauty and charm that Playa Sosua once held)

  • Sing Your Heart Out at Karaoke Night at Voy Voy

If you're looking for a fun night out, Voy Voy Beach Bar is the place to be on Monday nights for karaoke. This beachfront bar draws a lively crowd of both locals and tourists, creating an electric atmosphere where everyone sings along and cheers each other on. Whether you’re a seasoned performer or just want to have fun, this is a Cabarete tradition you don’t want to miss. Pro tip: get their jugo de chinola(passionfruit juice)- its the best in town.

  • Eat at Wilson’s at La Boca

For a unique dining experience, take a trip to Wilson’s at La Boca, a rustic riverside restaurant where fresh seafood is cooked over an open flame. Getting there is part of the adventure—you can either drive down a scenic dirt road or take a small boat across the river. The grilled lobster, fried fish, and tostones are crowd favorites, best enjoyed with an ice-cold Presidente beer and a breathtaking view of where the river meets the ocean.

  • Learn to Kite Surf on Kite Beach

Cabarete is one of the world’s top kite surfing destinations, and Kite Beach is the best place to learn. With consistent trade winds and warm waters, it’s an ideal spot for both beginners and experienced riders. Even if you don’t take a lesson, watching the colorful kites fill the sky is an unforgettable experience.
