Mateo's Cantina Wantagh Has It All: Delicious Eats, Great Deals & Unbeatable Vibes

I recently stopped by this spot for lunch during Restaurant Week, and it was one of the best meals I’ve had in a while! From the moment I walked in, the festive decor, great music, and lively atmosphere set the perfect tone. My waitress, Celina, was amazing—super friendly and attentive, making the experience even better.

The Menu & The Experience

Their restaurant week lunch menu featured two courses: an appetizer and an entrée. Some of the options for starters include empanadas (which I got!), chicken tortilla soup, wings, and guacamole & chips. 

For entrées, they offer three tacos (with four meat choices), quesadillas, fajitas, and more.

To start, they also bring out house-made chips and salsa—a delicious way to begin the meal!

The Food: Absolutely Delicious

I’m a huge fan of empanadas, and these exceeded my expectations. Stuffed with chicken tinga and birria, they were crispy, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned.

For my tacos, I chose:

🌮 Birria – This was phenomenal. I’ve had birria in Jalisco (where it originated), and these were just as incredible- rich, tender, and packed with flavor.

🌮 Asada – The steak was unbelievably tender and easy to eat, which isn’t always the case with steak tacos. These were perfectly cooked and delicious.

🌮 Al Pastor – While they weren’t my favorite, they were still good! I’m not the biggest fan of pork, so that’s probably why.

Why I Keep Coming Back

I’ve been here several times before for happy hour, and it’s easily one of the best deals around. If you go, the Passionfruit Martini is a must-try—it’s my absolute favorite!
